With precision strikes, anti-drone fighting characteristics, and the development of domestic defence technology, ULPGM-V3 improves India’s drone warfare potential.

Latest ULPGM-V3 News

  • The UAV-Launched Precision Guided Missile (ULPGM)-V3’s final development trials were successfully finished by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
  • Critical user trials by the armed forces were made possible by the experiments, which were carried out in both air-to-ground and air-to-air modes.
  • DRDO’s usage of the word “deliverable configuration” implies that little will change in later trials, indicating that induction is almost ready.

ULPGM Evolution: From V1 to V3

Over the course of three generations, the ULPGM has significantly advanced technologically:

  • V1: Simple precision free-fall missile
  • V2: Updates to the mid-course target, increased range, and propulsion
  • V3: Advanced seekers, numerous warheads, day-night fighting, and both air-to-ground and air-to-air capabilities

By converting the ULPGM from a simple drone-launched weapon into a highly adaptable, multi-role precision missile appropriate for contemporary drone warfare, the V3 signifies a generational leap.

Important ULPGM-V3 Technical Features

  • equipped with a high-definition dual-channel seeker, a sophisticated guiding system that precisely tracks both ground and airborne targets utilising a number of sensors.
  • equipped with a two-way data link, which allows operators to modify or update the target even after the missile has been fired. This is an essential feature in combat situations that move quickly.
  • able to precisely engage both fixed and moving targets in all weather conditions, day or night.

Versatility in Operations

  • It is appropriate for a variety of Indian operating theatres, including the Himalayan frontier, since it may be used in both plains and high-altitude areas.
  • equipped to combat a variety of targets, including drones, helicopters, reinforced buildings, tanks, armoured vehicles, bunkers, and other aerial threats.

Three Choices for Warheads

Depending on the needs of the operation, the missile can be equipped with one of three warheads:

  • Anti-Armour Warhead: Designed to destroy armoured vehicles and heavily protected tanks, such as those equipped with Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) and Rolled Homogeneous Armour (RHA), two unique protective layers seen in contemporary combat tanks.
  • Penetration-cum-Blast Warheads are essential for counter-insurgency and conventional warfare against entrenched positions since they are made to pierce and demolish bunkers and defended structures.
  • Pre-Fragmentation Warhead: Effective against people and light vehicles, it spreads high-speed metal pieces across a wide area to maximise damage.

Ecosystem of Production and Development

  • The ULPGM-V3 is a powerful example of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence, having been developed and manufactured fully within India’s defence ecosystem.
  • Hyderabad’s Nodal Development Lab is part of the Research Centre Imarat (RCI).
  • UAV Integration: Currently, Newspace Research and Technologies, Bengaluru, has created UAVs. DRDO is actively working with a number of other Indian businesses to integrate their long-range and high-endurance UAVs.

Drones’ Strategic Importance in Contemporary Warfare

The Revolution of Drones

  • Systems like ULPGM-V3 are crucial, according to experts, as drones are becoming more and more important in modern combat across the globe.
  • Drones increasingly play crucial roles in surveillance, precision strikes, and counter-drone operations in both conventional conflicts and asymmetric warfare, as evidenced by the continuing hostilities in West Asia and Ukraine.

Network-Based Combat

  • The increasing trend toward network-centric warfare, in which drones, sensors, and command systems collaborate in real time to precisely identify and hit targets, is reflected in the ULPGM-V3.
  • The missile’s ability to update targets after launch is especially useful in drone warfare situations where targets change quickly.

The Reasons Drones Will Be the Future

  • much lower risk for pilots and human combatants.
  • continuous real-time monitoring and the ability to launch precise strikes.
  • Scalability and quick mass production in contrast to traditional manned weapon systems.
  • Drone-launched weapon development is one of DRDO’s primary future target areas.
