The monster winter storm that walloped the Big Apple on Sunday unloaded snow totals that New Yorkers haven’t seen in years – and more flurries may be on the way soon.
Winter Storm Fern’s highest snowfall count in the five boroughs as of 1 a.m. Monday was in Washington Heights, where a whopping 14.9 inches was measured, according to the National Weather Service.
The winter storm – which pushed schools to virtual, delayed mass transit and saw New Yorkers engaging in bizarre snow day activities like massive snowball fights and cross-country skiing in Times Square – broke a daily snow record in Central Park on Jan. 25 with 11.4 inches of snowfall. It’s also the first time the city got more than a foot of snow since February 2021.
The highest snowfall totals reported around other boroughs include 14 inches in Huguenot, Staten Island; 13.5 inches in Fordham, The Bronx; 12 inches in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and 11.1 inches in Whitestone, Queens.
Towns just outside the Big Apple, like Tenafly in New Jersey’s Bergen County, saw more than 16 inches of snow, the National Weather Service said.
Centre Island in Long Island’s Nassau County reported 15.3 inches of snow, and Westchester County’s Somers saw a jaw-dropping 17 inches.
Monday’s snowfall was expected to taper off completely by 1 p.m. in the city, though below-freezing temperatures are forecast to continue into next week, the NWS said.
“In the wake of the storm, communities from the Southern Plains to the Northeast will contend with bitterly cold temperatures that will hamper cleanup efforts, prolong infrastructure impacts and maintain hazardous travel for several days,” the agency said.
Some 1,300 flights in and out of New York City’s airports were still canceled Monday, and a swath of delays – some “severe” – are in effect on local subways, according to the MTA.
Both the Long Island Rail Road and NJ Transit are operating on a weekend schedule.
The next time Gotham could see flurries is next Sunday, with a “chance” for snow, according to AccuWeather’s 7-day forecast.
In the meantime, the city is warning the lingering arctic freeze could also create dangerously slippery ice on roads and sidewalks.
“Although the accumulating snow has ended, roadways and walkways will remain icy and slippery with some occasional light snow and flurries through this morning,” the city’s emergency notification system posted on X Monday.
“Exercise caution if traveling.”
