New Delhi – Indian Railways is set to expand its premium Vande Bharat sleeper train fleet to meet rising passenger demand. The first 24-coach Vande Bharat sleeper train is currently under development at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, officials announced.
The existing Vande Bharat sleeper trains comprise 16 coaches with a capacity of 823 berths. The new, larger trains will feature 24 coaches, increasing total capacity to 1,224 berths. The decision follows positive passenger feedback from the initial Vande Bharat sleeper rake, which was launched on January 17 from Malda Town on the Howrah–Guwahati route.
Officials disclosed that the 24-coach sleeper train is in the design phase, with a prototype expected to be unveiled by the end of 2026. The expanded configuration aims to enhance capacity, onboard services, and passenger comfort for long-distance overnight journeys.
The proposed coach composition includes 17 AC 3-tier coaches, five AC 2-tier coaches, one AC First Class coach, and a dedicated AC pantry car. A key feature is the inclusion of a full-fledged pantry, designed to improve catering services, along with mini-pantry units and linen storage across coaches.
Passenger amenities will include ergonomic berths, individual reading lights, charging points for mobile devices and laptops, Wi-Fi-enabled information systems, infotainment, vacuum-assisted toilets, increased luggage space, and modern interior fittings. Accessibility features such as accessible toilets and ramps for divyangjan passengers are also incorporated.
The trainset will incorporate advanced propulsion and control systems, regenerative braking for energy efficiency, and a crashworthy stainless-steel body compliant with safety standards. Enhanced safety features include fire safety systems aligned with international norms, CCTV surveillance, intelligent diagnostics, and integration with the Kavach train collision avoidance system.
Designed to operate at speeds up to 160 kmph, the train will feature air-spring suspension, disc brakes, and improved noise insulation for a smooth, quiet night travel experience.
With an emphasis on energy efficiency, predictive maintenance, and remote condition monitoring, the new 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper exemplifies Indian Railways’ commitment to capacity enhancement, modern technology, and world-class passenger services.
