ICC vs Bangladesh 2.0: BCB Criticizes U19 World Cup Schedule Amid Ongoing Tensions with ICC

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has once again voiced strong objections against the International Cricket Council (ICC), this time over the scheduling and logistical arrangements during the ongoing U19 Cricket World Cup 2026. The dispute marks a continued strain in relations, following Bangladesh’s decision to boycott the T20 World Cup earlier this year.

Bangladesh’s U19 campaign concluded prematurely amid controversy, with the BCB citing significant disruptions caused by the ICC’s scheduling decisions. The board expressed concerns over repeated venue changes and an intense travel itinerary that hampered the team’s performance and recovery.

Initially, Bangladesh was scheduled to play two warm-up matches in Masvingo before moving to Harare. However, the ICC modified these plans, requiring the young players to undertake travel between venues separated by four hours, leading to logistical challenges. BCB game development coordinator Habibul Bashar criticized the fairness of this arrangement, stating, “Our calculations were lacking against England and India, but this travel schedule is something I want to highlight, even if people think I’m making excuses.”

The team faced prolonged journeys, including a nearly nine-hour bus ride from Harare to Bulawayo ahead of their opening fixture during the monsoon season—a move that affected player recovery and preparation. To ease the travel burden for key matches against India and New Zealand, the BCB funded internal flights. Nonetheless, subsequent matches saw the team traveling by bus multiple times, including a return trip to Bulawayo after matches and additional road journeys leading up to the Super Six stage.

Head coach Naveed Nawaz expressed frustration over the logistical hardships, revealing that the team had raised concerns with the ICC about the travel demands, but no adjustments were made. “The schedule was very unfair to us. We asked for the practice matches to be moved to avoid unnecessary travel, but our requests were ignored,” Nawaz stated.

Bangladesh’s U19 journey ended after a defeat to England, but the controversy surrounding their tournament experience has added fuel to the ongoing tensions with the ICC. These issues are part of a broader diplomatic stand-off, as Bangladesh refused to participate in the T20 World Cup 2026 in India due to security concerns, demanding the matches be shifted to Sri Lanka. The ICC’s refusal to accommodate these demands led to Bangladesh boycotting the event, with Scotland replacing them.

As the saga continues, the dispute underscores ongoing disagreements between Bangladesh and the ICC, highlighting concerns over scheduling fairness and broader diplomatic issues within international cricket.
