Rain Threatens to Delay India-Pakistan Match at T20 World Cup 2026

Colombo, February 15 — With just eight hours remaining before the highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash at the T20 World Cup 2026, weather concerns are casting a shadow over the scheduled start. The latest forecast for the Khettarama area, where the R Premadasa Stadium is located, indicates heavy rainfall expected to hit just before the match begins at 7 pm.

The Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology has issued a warning about a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which could result in up to a 70% chance of rain during the match window. Meteorological models suggest that between 6-7 pm, approximately 5.1mm of rain could fall, easing to light drizzle from 7-10 pm with an additional 3.8mm. If these predictions hold, the match could be delayed, shortened, or possibly washed out altogether.

While there is a chance that rain may subside before the game starts, most models show a 50-60% probability of rain between 1 pm and 7 pm, meaning spectators and officials should be prepared for potential interruptions or delays. Rainfall remains a significant concern throughout the match period, with passing showers likely even if the heaviest rain occurs earlier.

On Saturday evening, similar weather conditions persisted with continuous drizzle around 6 pm, by which time the Indian team had completed their training session. Both teams currently have four points from two games each. Should Sunday’s match be washed out, both sides will share a point, securing their qualification for the Super Eight stage.

Fortunately, the Premadasa Stadium is equipped with an advanced drainage system and comprehensive ground staff protocols to manage Colombo’s tropical downpours. Unlike many venues that only cover the pitch, the stadium has covers that protect the entire playing area, preventing water from soaking into the outfield. The ground staff manually push water towards perimeter drains, often faster and more efficiently than mechanical equipment.

Under normal conditions, the pitch is typically ready for play within 45 to 60 minutes after heavy rain, but officials will monitor weather conditions closely to determine the best course of action.
