Italy has missed out on qualifying for the FIFA World Cup for the third consecutive time, marking a historic and deeply painful moment for the footballing nation. The four-time world champions failed to secure a spot in this summer’s tournament in North America after a dramatic penalty shootout loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Tuesday’s qualification playoff final.

The match at the Bilino Polje Stadium was a rollercoaster of emotions. Italy took an early lead through Moise Kean in the 15th minute but faced adversity when Alessandro Bastoni was sent off for a reckless challenge just before halftime. Despite fighting hard, Italy conceded a late equalizer from Haris Tabakovic in the 79th minute, sending the game into extra time. The shootout proved devastating for Italy, with Pio Esposito missing the first penalty, Bryan Cristante hitting the bar, and Esmir Bajraktarevic converting under Gianluigi Donnarumma, sealing Bosnia’s victory.

Scenes of despair flooded Italy’s stands and dressing rooms, with players and fans visibly distraught. The defeat has reopened wounds for a nation that prides itself on a rich footballing history and success on the international stage. The fallout has ignited calls for major reforms within Italian football, emphasizing the need for tactical reinvention and increased focus on attacking flair.

Italy’s failure continues a troubling trend, as they become the first World Cup winners to miss three consecutive tournaments. Their previous eliminations came via play-offs against Sweden in 2018 and North Macedonia four years ago. Bosnia, on the other hand, will participate in their second World Cup, their first since 2014, after a passionate celebration that spilled onto the pitch.

After the match, Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso expressed pride in his team’s effort despite the heartbreak, though he appeared visibly shaken. Gattuso’s future remains uncertain, although Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina confirmed that he had asked Gattuso to stay on as coach.

As Italy faces an uncertain future, the nation’s footballing pride has been severely dented, and the road ahead is expected to involve significant introspection and overhaul.
