Bihar equation shifts after Rajya Sabha polls, 3 Congress MLAs vote for BJP

The political landscape in Bihar is witnessing a significant upheaval following the recent Rajya Sabha elections, with reports indicating a shift in allegiance among Congress MLAs that could alter the state’s power dynamics.

At the heart of the developments are three Congress MLAs who defied party lines by voting for the BJP candidate, despite the Congress party’s claim to hold six seats in the Bihar Legislative Assembly. This cross-voting has fueled speculation about a potential split within the Congress ranks in the state.

Sources suggest that four Congress MLAs are contemplating a move to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with three already having cast their votes in favor of NDA candidates. The involvement of a fourth MLA is also under scrutiny, raising concerns about internal dissent and weakening party cohesion.

The situation is further complicated by the absence of a formal leader and whip in the Congress Legislature Party, which has resulted in diminished internal discipline. The lack of clear authority has made it easier for up to four of the party’s six legislators to consider rebellion without risking disqualification under anti-defection laws.

If these MLAs switch allegiance, the BJP-led coalition could come within a single seat of securing a majority in the Bihar Assembly, even without the support of the Janata Dal (United). This development signals a potential major shift in Bihar’s political equilibrium, with far-reaching implications for government formation in the state.
