Inculcating Cultural Values through Family Rituals
Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh and his wife, actress Geeta Basra, exemplify the rich traditions of Gurpurab in their family life. The couple actively involves their children in the customs and rituals, ensuring that the essence of their culture is passed down. “We usually go to the Gurdwara and pray,” shares Harbhajan. “When we’re in Punjab, we partake in Prabhat Pheri in the mornings, engage in paath, enjoy langar, and decorate our home with lights and flowers.” He emphasizes the joy of making kada prasad at home, something their kids adore, alongside indulging in their favorite Punjabi dishes like Chole Bhature and Rajma Chawal.
Memorable Moments of Blessings and Togetherness
Geeta fondly recalls how their marriage coincided with Gurpurab, making the day even more special. “The entire house was beautifully lit up, and we had a tent set up outside for guests. Serving food to everyone while I was pregnant filled me with joy and the blessings of Babaji. Afterward, we went to the gurdwara and prayed together,” she reminisces.
Spirituality and Values for the Next Generation
The couple emphasizes the importance of nurturing a sense of spirituality in their children. “It’s our duty to guide them and help them understand the teachings of the Guru,” Geeta explains. Their children are being raised with values from both Sikhism and Hinduism, with a focus on goodness and karma. “Our daughter meditates with me,” she adds, highlighting the spiritual bond they share. Although Geeta comes from a Hindu background, she embraced Sikhism after marrying Harbhajan, stating, “For us, Gurpurab is a grand celebration, akin to Diwali, especially at the Golden Temple, which sparkles beautifully.”
Bhajji’s Spiritual Journey and Parenting
Geeta expresses her admiration for Harbhajan’s deep spirituality during festivals. “He is influenced by his Babaji and named after him. His spirituality is something we want our kids to emulate too,” she shares. Their daughter, Hinaya, has already begun to display these values by reciting portions of the Hanuman Chalisa alongside her mother. “As long as my kids believe in doing good, I’m content,” Geeta says.
The Joy of Giving and the Essence of Langar
Reflecting on her experiences during Guru Nanak Jayanti, Geeta recalls one of her most cherished memories: serving food during langar. “We organized a langar at home, welcoming everyone and joining in the spirit of giving,” she recalls with warmth. Geeta highlights a key teaching from Sikhism that inspires her: a principle she describes through a Gurmukhi tattoo her husband sports, which conveys the importance of humility, regardless of one’s achievements.
Hasleen Kaur’s Memories of Gurpurab
Actress Hasleen Kaur, who is set to star opposite Barun Sobti in an upcoming web series, shares her own fond memories of Gurpurab, emphasizing the significance of maintaining family traditions. “We decorate our home with lights and flowers, as I have since childhood, and continue to do so,” Hasleen explains. Her mother prepares kada prasad very early in the morning, a beloved tradition, and the family dresses in new clothes for the occasion. In the evening, they visit the gurdwara before returning home to enjoy sweets and dinner together.
Embracing Tradition and Seeking Peace
The celebration of Gurpurab extends beyond merely observing rituals for Hasleen; it’s a vital part of her lifestyle. Lighting diyas at home and sprinkling Amrit from the gurdwara, accompanied by coins, are traditions that remain essential. “Visiting the gurdwara brings me peace and happiness. In moments of achievement or sadness, turning to God or reciting prayers has always strengthened me,” she notes.
By cherishing these traditions and instilling strong values, both Harbhajan Singh and Geeta Basra, along with Hasleen Kaur, highlight the importance of spirituality and community in their lives, setting an inspiring example for their families.
