Amazon.com Inc. is reportedly planning to initiate a fresh round of layoffs starting as early as next week, targeting thousands of corporate roles amid ongoing efforts to streamline operations and reduce bureaucracy.

According to Bloomberg, sources familiar with the matter indicate that Amazon may cut between 10,000 to 30,000 white-collar jobs in this upcoming phase. If the higher estimates materialize, the company’s total corporate layoffs could reach approximately 30,000, adding to the 18,000 job cuts announced last October.

Potential Timeline and Affected Departments

The second wave of layoffs could begin as soon as Tuesday, January 27. The cuts are expected to mirror the previous reduction in October 2025, which saw around 14,000 positions eliminated.

Teams across Amazon’s divisions—including Amazon Web Services (AWS), retail, Prime Video, and People Experience and Technology (HR)—are likely to be impacted by this wave of layoffs.

Context and Company Position

Despite the significant reduction in roles, Amazon’s overall workforce remains around 1.5 million employees, meaning these layoffs will constitute a relatively small portion of its global staff.

While earlier statements linked Amazon’s workforce downsizing to the adoption of AI tools and generative AI, CEO Andy Jassy clarified that there is “no direct connection” between AI and the layoffs. He described the layoffs as part of a broader organizational restructuring aimed at making the company more agile and less bureaucratic, denying that cost pressures are the primary driver.

Official Response and Next Steps

Amazon has yet to officially confirm the exact date of the layoffs or disclose the total number of affected employees. An internal document viewed by Bloomberg suggests that many employees will be notified of their layoffs in the coming days.

As the company continues to adapt to a slower growth environment and broader industry trend of tech job reductions, employees and industry watchers await further official updates from Amazon.
