Woman Dies of Suspected Scrub Typhus in Andhra Pradesh; 1,317 Cases Reported, Officials Assurance Despite Concerns

A woman from Mettapalli village in Cheepurupalli mandal passed away at a private hospital in Vizianagaram with symptoms resembling scrub typhus, raising renewed awareness about the infection. However, health authorities have reassured the public that the situation remains under control despite increasing reports of cases.

Unconfirmed Diagnosis and Ongoing Investigation

Health Commissioner G. Veerapandian stated that the Rapid Diagnostic Kit used in the hospital cannot definitively confirm scrub typhus as the cause of death, as the more accurate ELISA test was not performed. A rapid response team has been instructed to investigate the case further.

Reported Cases and Statistics

Official figures indicate that the number of infections is being exaggerated, and the overall situation is manageable. Across Andhra Pradesh, 6,778 samples have been tested this year, with 1,346 positive results. In 2024, the state recorded 1,613 positive cases out of 10,150 samples, while in 2023, there were 1,295 positive cases from 7,281 samples.

District-wise Breakdown

Chittoor district has reported the highest number of cases this year, with 384 confirmed infections. Kakinada has documented 146 cases, Visakhapatnam 124, and YSR Kadapa 97. In Visakhapatnam alone, 19 of 210 samples tested in November returned positive. At King George Hospital, three patients undergoing treatment are reported to be stable and expected to be discharged soon, confirmed Superintendent I Vani.

Symptoms, Treatment, and Preventive Measures

Dr. D Radhakrishnan explained that common symptoms include fever, body pain, rashes, scab-like lesions, and swollen lymph nodes. He emphasized that the recent rise in reported cases is mainly due to expanded testing rather than a sudden increase in transmission. Most patients respond well to antibiotics such as doxycycline, and fatalities are rare. Vulnerable groups include individuals with suppressed immunity or existing health issues.

Health experts advise the public to take preventive measures, including avoiding overgrown vegetation, wearing protective clothing, and applying insect repellents to minimize the risk of mite bites. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge caution while reassuring the public about the controlled nature of the outbreak.
