Assam Police thwart ‘mass casualty terror attack’, arrest 2 ULFA-I cadres

The two were nabbed in an operation carried out by the police with the help of central agencies and security forces, said Tinsukia SSP Mayank Kumar. Two armed cadres of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) were arrested in Tinsukia district, and the Assam police claimed to have avoided on Saturday a “mass casualty terror attack”.

The police have identified the two individuals nabbed on Friday at Jagun in Tinsukia district as self-styled ‘second lieutenants’ Humenjyoti Baruah (27) and Papu Moran (30), both from Tinsukia district.

The two have been apprehended in an operation undertaken by the police with the help of central agencies and security forces, Tinsukia SSP Mayank Kumar said.

“One very alarming thing that has come up in the preliminary inquiry is that they were tasked by ULFA (I) to come to Tinsukia and perform indiscriminate fire and murder innocent citizens in the town. And carry out a terrorist incident here so that an environment of dread is generated throughout this entire area. “The proposed way of working shows the hand of external actors in destabilising the region,” SSP Kumar stated.

Police stated the materials recovered from them included two AK-56 weapons, 172 rounds of AK ammo and two hand grenades. Other discovered goods included food supplies which police claimed were “meant for prolonged jungle survival”, bags and “other war-like stores including cash money.”

The two were involved in a number of ULFA (I) attacks in the region in recent years including an attack on a police commando post at Jagun that left four police personnel dead in March this year and an attack on an army camp in Kakopathar in Tinsukia district that left three personnel injured, SSP Kumar said.

The pro-talks side of the ULFA has inked a tripartite peace accord with the Union and state governments on December 29, 2023. But the Paresh Baruah-led ULFA-I group, operating from Myanmar, is still not ready for talks without a discussion on Assam’s sovereignty.
