California Kidnapping Case: Sikh Temple Cook Found Dead, Police Say He Was Mistaken Target

Avtaar Singh Kidnapping and Murder Case: Authorities Say Victim Was Not Intended Target

CALIFORNIA, Feb 26, 2026: A 57-year-old Sikh temple volunteer who was abducted earlier this month in California was found dead days later, with authorities confirming that he was not the intended target of the kidnapping and killing.

Officials from the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said Avtaar Singh, a longtime temple volunteer and cook, was mistakenly targeted in an incident that investigators believe was meant for another individual.

Sheriff Patrick Withrow told local media that the crime was deliberate but not random. “This was not a random act. They were targeted after another individual for a specific reason,” he said, adding that authorities are working to determine the motive behind the crime.

Abducted from Temple Premises

Singh, who served at the Gurdwara Guru Nanak Parkash complex in Tracy, was reported missing on February 17 after he was allegedly abducted from the temple grounds during the afternoon.

Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed a white SUV and three individuals dressed in dark clothing forcing Singh into the vehicle.

His wife alerted authorities after he failed to return home. Their six-month-old triplets were later found alone at their residence within the temple complex.

Body Found Nearly 100 Miles Away

Three days after the abduction, Singh’s body was discovered near Lake Berryessa in Napa County, approximately 100 miles from Tracy. The vehicle believed to have been used in the kidnapping was also found at the scene.

In a statement, the Sheriff’s Office confirmed Singh’s death and said investigators are continuing efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.

Community Mourns Innocent Victim

San Joaquin District Attorney Ron Freitas described Singh as an innocent victim and urged anyone with information to assist the investigation.

Singh was widely respected within the Sikh community for his years of service, including his association with institutions linked to Damdami Taksal. Community members remembered him as humble, dedicated, and selfless.

Funeral Arrangements Announced

Singh’s funeral will be held at Fry Memorial Chapel, followed by prayers and a community gathering at the gurdwara.

Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward as the investigation into the kidnapping and murder continues.
