The highly anticipated third T20I between India and South Africa at SuperSport Park in Centurion faced an unusual interruption due to an unexpected invasion of flying ants. The incident occurred after the first over of South Africa’s innings, causing significant disruption on the field.
As the South African batsmen took to the crease, pacer Arshdeep Singh found himself in a battle against the swarming insects. Hardik Pandya, preparing to bowl his first delivery, was also visibly disturbed as the pests overwhelmed the playing area. Assessing the situation, the umpires deemed the insect invasion too disruptive for the match to continue and instructed the players to leave the field. At that point, South Africa was at 7 runs without loss, chasing a daunting target of 220 runs set by India. Ground staff quickly mobilized to address the situation, employing vacuum cleaners to clear the ants away. After a brief hiatus of 19 minutes, play resumed, allowing the players to return to the field.
Tilak Varma’s Batting Brilliance
Before the insect interruption, India showcased an impressive batting display, largely driven by the exceptional performance of young talent Tilak Varma, who put on a masterclass with an unbeaten score of 107 runs. This innings marked his maiden international century, helping India to a formidable total of 219 runs for 6 wickets in their 20 overs. Varma’s dynamic innings featured seven sixes and eight fours, all scored off just 57 balls, as he effectively dismantled the South African bowling attack.
Tilak shared a crucial 107-run partnership with Abhishek Sharma, who played a significant supporting role with a rapid-fire 50 off 25 balls, including five sixes and three fours. Their contributions were even more vital after India lost Sanju Samson for a duck on the second ball from Marco Jansen. The duo’s explosive batting laid a solid foundation for the innings, even as South African spinner Keshav Maharaj attempted to reign in the scoring with figures of 2 for 36.
Despite a few setbacks in the middle overs with captain Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Rinku Singh all falling cheaply, Tilak’s late assault ensured that India finished strongly, scoring 52 runs in just 22 balls during the final overs.
South Africa’s Fightback and Tense Finish
In response, South Africa put up a fierce fight, led by Marco Jansen, who scored 54 runs off just 17 balls, creating a tense atmosphere for the Indian bowlers. However, despite their efforts, South Africa fell short, managing to score 208 runs for 7 wickets, thereby handing India an 11-run victory. With this win, India took a decisive 2-1 lead in the four-match T20 series.
The final T20I will be held at the Wanderers on Friday, where both teams will vie for series supremacy following an eventful and intense encounter in Centurion.
