Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has raised concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on its business while simultaneously raising a record $20 billion through its largest-ever US dollar bond issuance, according to recent reports.

In its annual financial report released last week, Alphabet emphasized the potential effects of AI on its advertising revenue, noting that significant investments in AI technology could lead to excess capacity. The company indicated that ramping up compute resources required for AI training and inference might result in increased costs and operational complexities.

During an analyst call, CEO Sundar Pichai expressed concerns over the availability of “compute capacity,” citing challenges related to power, land, and supply chain constraints needed to meet soaring demand. “Power, land, supply chain constraints, how do you ramp up to meet this extraordinary demand for this moment?” Pichai remarked, highlighting the industry-wide challenges.

The company disclosed in its filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that to satisfy the demands of AI workloads and traditional cloud services, it is entering into significant leasing agreements with third-party providers. However, these arrangements could lead to higher costs and increased operational risks, including liabilities if vendors fail to deliver.

Additionally, Alphabet acknowledged concerns that its own AI product, Gemini AI, could potentially cannibalize its core search business. Slower adoption of Gemini might impact advertising revenues, which remain a primary revenue stream. Despite these risks, Alphabet reported a 13.5% year-over-year increase in Q4 ad revenue to $82.28 billion, indicating resilience in its advertising model so far.

In parallel with its AI ambitions, Alphabet is raising substantial funds. On February 9, the company completed a $20 billion bond sale—its largest-ever—initially aiming for $15 billion, Bloomberg reported. The proceeds are intended to fuel its expansive AI-related investments, particularly in data centers critical for AI development.

Remarkably, Alphabet is also exploring innovative financing options, including plans for bonds in the UK and Switzerland, with a rare 100-year bond offering—the first such move by a tech firm since the late 1990s dotcom era.

Furthermore, the company announced plans to allocate up to $185 billion in capital expenditures this year, the highest in recent years, primarily to expand data center infrastructure. These investments are already contributing to revenue growth, as AI-driven innovations boost online search activity and advertising.

Overall, Alphabet’s financial maneuvers and candid disclosures underscore its aggressive push into AI, balanced by concerns over capacity, costs, and evolving market dynamics.
