WILLEMSTAD, Netherlands – After a four-year hiatus, grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov has claimed victory at the prestigious 88th Tata Steel Masters, often dubbed the “Wimbledon of chess.” Going into the final round with a half-point lead, Abdusattorov secured his title by defeating Arjun Erigaisi, maintaining his narrow advantage and finishing the tournament with a score of 9/13.

This marks Abdusattorov’s first outright win at Tata Steel Masters after narrowly missing out in the previous editions. He finished half a point ahead of fellow Uzbek compatriot Javokhir Sindarov, who also performed strongly throughout the event.

In the Challengers section, British grandmaster Andy Woodward emerged victorious, earning a half-point lead over Ukrainian legend Vasyl Ivanchuk. Woodward’s impressive performance with a score of 10/13 has earned him a coveted spot in next year’s Tata Steel Masters. His victory also saw his rating increase by 23.3 points.

Final Round Drama and Close Contests

The battle for the Masters crown was intense, with five players vying for the title heading into the last round: Abdusattorov, Sindarov, Hans Niemann, Vincent Keymer, and Jorden van Foreest. Abdusattorov’s decisive victory against Erigaisi sealed his status as the undisputed champion.

Meanwhile, in the Challengers, the race was equally fierce. Vasyl Ivanchuk and Aydin Suleymanli remained in contention until the last game. Woodward’s win against Erwin L’Ami, combined with Suleymanli’s loss to Velimir Ivic, secured his first place. Ivanchuk’s strong performance, including some remarkable chess, earned him second place with 9.5/13.

A Rising Star and Future Opportunities

Abdusattorov’s victory highlights his rising prominence, as he increased his FIDE rating by 19.5 points and now ranks as the fifth strongest player globally. His final game saw a strategic win with the black pieces against Erigaisi, demonstrating his class and consistency.

Andy Woodward’s triumph not only grants him a place in the 2027 Tata Steel Masters but also signifies a major milestone in his career, with his performance heralded as a sign of his potential on the world stage.

The 88th Tata Steel Chess Tournament concluded with Abdusattorov’s crowning and Woodward’s impressive breakthrough, promising an exciting year ahead for chess fans worldwide.
