Not a One-Man Show, Says Padikkal After Karnataka’s Stunning Win Secures Ranji Trophy Quarterfinals

Sunday’s dramatic victory, led by Devdutt Padikkal, has revitalized Karnataka’s Ranji Trophy campaign, propelling the team into the quarterfinals in a tense finish.

In a challenging fortnight, Karnataka’s season faced multiple setbacks. Following a disappointing performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and an early exit in the Vijay Hazare Trophy semifinals, the team’s prospects seemed bleak. A heavy 217-run defeat to Madhya Pradesh further jeopardized their qualification hopes for the Ranji Trophy knockout stage.

However, Sunday’s win, inspired by Padikkal’s stellar performance, turned the tide for Karnataka, giving them a last-minute passage into the quarterfinals — a result that felt like a breath of fresh air to the side.

“This is incredible,” Padikkal told Sportstar after the match. “We spoke at the start of the day that we could do something special and look back on it as one of our best days on the cricket field. I’m really happy.”

Chasing a daunting target of 250 runs from 40 overs, Karnataka appeared to be on the brink of defeat at various points. The team had earlier allowed Punjab to escape from 168 for six in the first innings and struggled to contain the home side’s batters in the second.

Padikkal acknowledged the team’s resilience, saying, “There were times when we thought it wasn’t possible, but the boys kept believing. We kept coming back into the game whenever it was pulling away. Everyone stood up. It wasn’t a one-man show. It wasn’t an easy pitch to take wickets, but every bowler did his job. We’ve always prided ourselves on going deep into tournaments. Hopefully, we can continue playing this way and win three more games.”
