PM Modi Congratulates Tarique Rahman; BNP Hopes for Stronger Bilateral Ties

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday thanked India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for recognising the outcome of Bangladesh’s general elections and expressed hope for stronger bilateral relations under the new government.

Speaking to PTI Videos, BNP Standing Committee member and chief coordinator for the 2026 election, Nazrul Islam Khan, said the party appreciated Mr. Modi’s acknowledgment of the people’s mandate.

“We thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for congratulating our leader, Tarique Rahman. It is great that a democratic country recognises the verdict of the people, and Mr. Narendra Modi has done this. We thank him,” Mr. Khan said.

He added that the BNP believes relations between the two neighbouring countries would strengthen under Mr. Rahman’s leadership. “On behalf of our party, we thank him, and we believe that under the leadership of our leader, Mr. Tarique Rahman, relations between these two countries and their people will be strengthened,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Modi congratulated Mr. Rahman on leading the Bangladesh Nationalist Party to a decisive victory in the parliamentary elections.

In a post on X, Mr. Modi said, “I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.”

He added that the victory reflected the trust of the Bangladeshi people in Mr. Rahman’s leadership.

The Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to supporting a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. “India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals,” he said.
