Sri Lanka co-hosts Sri Lanka qualified for the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup 2026 after defeating Australia by eight wickets in a thrilling match. Following the victory, Sri Lanka’s head coach Sanath Jayasuriya credited the influence of two former Indian coaches in shaping the team’s impressive performance.
Sri Lanka’s win was highlighted by a remarkable batting display from Pathum Nissanka, who scored his maiden century of the tournament and pulled off a spectacular catch that many fans are calling the catch of the tournament. Standing at point, Nissanka dived to his left to intercept a Glenn Maxwell switch hit, snatching the ball behind his body.
In his post-match comments, Jayasuriya praised the contributions of R Sridhar and Vikram Rathour, both former Indian national team coaches, for their pivotal roles in the team’s success. “R Sridhar is our fielding coach, and Vikram Rathour is our batting coach. They are both excellent gentlemen who work tirelessly at practice. Their IPL experience has really helped the players gain confidence,” Jayasuriya explained.
He also lauded the team’s resilient bowling effort, especially after being hit for 100 runs in the first eight overs. Despite losing key fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana to a hamstring injury, Sri Lanka’s spinners managed to restrict Australia to 181 runs in 20 overs. Jayasuriya emphasized the importance of varying the pace and making life difficult for the Australian batsmen, who attempted aggressive strokes.
“Our strategy was to vary the pace and slow the game down, especially since the wicket was gripping. Maheesh Theekshana and the others bowled exceptionally well, and even after Matheesha’s injury, we adapted quickly,” he added.
Nissanka’s stellar century and the disciplined bowling display masked the fact that Sri Lanka has lost two of their key bowlers, Wanindu Hasaranga and Pathirana, to injuries. Nonetheless, the team is optimistic about continuing their strong form in the upcoming rounds of the tournament.
