In a historic move, Sunetra Pawar has been sworn in as Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, becoming the state’s first woman to hold the position. The ceremony took place amid significant political developments following the tragic death of her husband, NCP Chief Ajit Pawar, in a plane crash on Wednesday morning.

All portfolios previously held by Ajit Pawar, except for Finance and Planning, are expected to be transferred to Sunetra Pawar. The appointment marks a new chapter in Maharashtra politics, with Sunetra stepping into a leadership role after decades of behind-the-scenes involvement.

Background and Political Lineage

Born in 1963 in Dharashiv (formerly Osmanabad), Sunetra Pawar’s political roots run deep. Her father, Bajirao Patil, was a veteran regional leader, and her brother, Padamsinh Bajirao Patil, was a prominent political figure in the 1980s. Growing up in a household immersed in public service, Sunetra’s political inclinations were evident early on.

She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from SB College, Aurangabad. Despite her academic background, she has been actively involved in industrial ventures, notably the Baramati High-Tech Textile Park, overseeing production, investment, employment, and women’s empowerment initiatives.

Entrepreneurial and Social Initiatives

As a businesswoman and trustee of Vidya Pratishthan, an educational group serving over 25,000 students, Sunetra has demonstrated leadership in institutional management. She is also known for her social service activities and environmental advocacy.

On her website, she highlights her role in founding the Environmental Forum of India (EFOI), which transformed Katewadi village into India’s first ‘eco village’—a model for water conservation and solar energy.

Political Dynamics and Family Response

The decision to appoint Sunetra Pawar as Deputy CM was made solely by the NCP, without consultation with the Pawar family, according to Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar’s uncle and NCP chief. When questioned about his involvement, Sharad Pawar stated, “I don’t know,” signaling a clear separation between family and party politics.

The political landscape in Maharashtra has been tense since the July 2023 split within the NCP, when Ajit Pawar broke away from his uncle to forge his own path. Now, as the state faces a leadership vacuum, Sunetra Pawar’s emergence signals a shift towards a new generation of leadership.

A New Face in Maharashtra Politics

While the Pawar name has long been associated with power, the spotlight now turns to Sunetra Pawar—an experienced observer of governance and a respected social leader. As leaders from the Ajit Pawar faction appear receptive to her leadership, she is poised to play a decisive role in shaping the future of Maharashtra’s political landscape.
