According to sources familiar with US discussions, President Donald Trump is contemplating the potential seizure of Kharg Island, a strategic Iranian oil hub in the Persian Gulf. The move aims to deliver a significant blow to Tehran’s economy by targeting its primary crude export facility, potentially “an economic knockout of the regime,” US officials told Axios.

Kharg Island, situated approximately 30 kilometers off Iran’s coast, handles nearly 90% of Iran’s crude exports and has become a focal point amid escalating tensions in the region. The proposal to seize the island comes as Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has triggered a global energy crisis, constricting vital oil shipments and pushing prices higher.

If executed, the operation could involve US troops on the ground, raising concerns over Iranian retaliation against oil infrastructure across Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia. However, Israel, a key US ally, has indicated reluctance to pursue military action against Iran, with Israeli officials emphasizing a preference for internal change over invasion. Israel’s ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, stated that neither Washington nor Jerusalem intends to invade Iran, focusing instead on diplomatic and economic pressures.

The Strategic Significance of Kharg Island

Kharg’s importance stems from its role as Iran’s primary oil export terminal, with key developments dating back to Iran’s oil expansion in the 1960s and 1970s. Despite Iran’s efforts to diversify export routes, including the 2021 opening of the Jask terminal in the Gulf of Oman, Kharg remains a critical vulnerability and a major economic asset controlled by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

President Trump has publicly described Kharg as a “crown jewel” for Iran, claiming that US military actions have “totally obliterated” military targets on the island. US officials suggest that seizing Kharg could significantly weaken Iran’s regime, with some officials noting that such an operation would be a “big risk” but with “big rewards.”

Political and Military Reactions

Senator Lindsey Graham, a vocal critic of Iran, praised the potential operation, stating that controlling Kharg would be pivotal, asserting, “He who controls Kharg Island controls the destiny of this war.” Meanwhile, Trump has indicated ongoing military strikes against Iranian targets in the region, including recent attacks on Kharg’s military installations, while sparing its oil facilities.

Despite the aggressive rhetoric, some analysts caution about the risks of escalation, including potential retaliation from Iran or regional allies. The Biden administration continues to explore options to address the crisis, with Trump reportedly working to assemble an international coalition to reopen the Strait of Hormuz amid rising oil prices.

As the situation unfolds, the US’s next move on Kharg Island remains uncertain, but its strategic importance continues to dominate regional security discussions.
