New Delhi – Young Indian cricketer Abhishek Sharma came remarkably close to breaking Yuvraj Singh’s record for the fastest half-century in T20 International cricket, achieving the milestone in just 14 balls during the third T20I against New Zealand.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed confidence that Sharma has the potential to surpass Yuvraj’s legendary 12-ball fifty, which was scored during the 2007 T20 World Cup against England, famously highlighted by his six consecutive sixes off Stuart Broad.

On Sunday, Sharma’s explosive innings in Guwahati saw him reach 50 in only 14 balls, showcasing his incredible batting prowess during the powerplay. Ashwin praised Sharma’s bat speed and technique, calling him “God’s own child” and emphasizing his extraordinary talent. “Even if wickets fall, he’s hitting long sixes. Yesterday, he smashed a straight six, and after hitting it, he looked at his bat — it hit the bottom but still went for six. His bat swing and shot selection are just unbelievable,” Ashwin said.

Sharma’s quick half-century, combined with Suryakumar Yadav’s rapid 57 off 26 balls, powered India to a dominant eight-wicket victory, chasing down 154 runs in just 10 overs. This win secured India’s series victory, as they completed a clean sweep in the five-match T20I series.

The Indian team’s performance was marked by aggressive batting, with Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Sharma, and Yadav all displaying ruthless intent. Notably, the over from New Zealand’s bowlers was economical at just 11 runs, with two such overs in the innings.

This victory ranks among India’s most commanding wins against a top-tier opponent in recent times, reaffirming their dominance in the series and highlighting Sharma’s potential to set new records in the format.
