Southampton:
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has demanded his team “show what we are made of” following their unexpected 2-1 defeat to second-tier Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday. The result ended Arsenal’s hopes of securing their first FA Cup trophy since 2020.

Match Recap and Key Moments
The Gunners fell behind early in the second half when Ross Stewart scored for Southampton at a lively St Mary’s Stadium. Arsenal responded with a spirited effort, and Viktor Gyokeres, who came off the bench, equalized for the visitors. However, Southampton secured victory in the 85th minute when Shea Charles slotted home from the edge of the box, sealing an upset.

Arsenal struggled throughout the match, hampered by injuries to key players Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, while Brazil defender Gabriel Magalhaes was forced off with a knee injury. The London club’s performance was below their usual standards, with defensive lapses proving costly.

Manager’s Reaction
Arteta expressed disappointment with his side’s sluggish performance, particularly criticizing defensive errors.
“We conceded the first goal in a very unusual way for us, and the second was from direct play. We didn’t manage the long balls well enough. It’s difficult to explain, credit to Southampton,” he said.
“We had dominance around the box and created two big chances but failed to capitalize. Defending errors like today make it very hard to reach the semi-finals.”

The defeat marked Arsenal’s fifth loss of the season and their first back-to-back losses across all competitions, intensifying their disappointment after recent setbacks. The Premier League leaders had previously lost the League Cup final 2-0 to Manchester City.

Looking Ahead
Arteta acknowledged the challenges faced this season, including injuries and difficult conditions, and emphasized the need for resilience.
“You have to adapt to the wind, injuries, and tough situations. Now, we must show what we are made of,” he stated.
The Spaniard also reflected on the high expectations placed on the team, saying, “Nobody demands more than us. We’ve been under pressure from the start, and we’ll keep pushing.”

Southampton’s Historic Win
Southampton’s victory, reminiscent of their 1976 FA Cup triumph over Manchester United, was celebrated as a significant giant-killing. The Saints, now in the semi-finals at Wembley for the first time since 2021, wore a special yellow and blue kit to honor that historic moment.

Southampton manager Tonda Eckert praised his team’s effort, saying, “We knew it would be a tough game, but we reacted well in the second half. Belief is always there. Now, we focus on Wrexham in the Championship playoffs.”

The Saints’ victory sets up a semi-final clash at Wembley, with Southampton aiming to make further history and secure a place in the Championship’s top tier.
