The producers of S.S. Rajamouli’s upcoming action-adventure epic, “Varanasi,” have shared insights into the strategic thinking guiding the film’s release and marketing efforts. The highly anticipated project is set to premiere on April 7, 2027, with its campaign kicking off through a mysterious installation in the ancient Indian city of Varanasi.
Produced under the banners of Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business, the film is helmed by producers K.L. Narayana and S.S. Karthikeya. Karthikeya explained to Variety that “Varanasi” is central to the film’s narrative, which inspired the decision to initiate the marketing campaign directly in the city. “Beginning the release conversation from Varanasi felt instinctive because the city lies at the heart of this story,” he stated. The cryptic on-ground installation was designed to pique curiosity, encouraging audiences to connect the dots organically.
The chosen release date was meticulously planned to optimize the film’s theatrical run by coinciding with major Indian festivals and holidays. “April 7, 2027, falls within the festive period of Ugadi and Gudi Padwa, leading into a weekend, and is followed by important celebrations such as Ambedkar Jayanti and Rama Navami,” Karthikeya detailed. “This creates a strong extended window for theatrical success, aligning perfectly with our strategic goals.”
“Varanasi” narrates a story spanning thousands of years across multiple continents, including Antarctica, Africa, and India. A key sequence draws inspiration from the Indian epic “Ramayana,” with the protagonist associated with Lord Rama. The film’s release around Rama Navami, which celebrates Rama’s birth, adds cultural significance to its timing.
The film stars Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu, alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Following the global success of Rajamouli’s “RRR” in 2022—critically acclaimed and earning numerous awards, including an Academy Award for “Naatu Naatu”—“Varanasi” aims to continue the director’s streak of international recognition. The project reunites Rajamouli with Oscar-winning composer MM Keeravani, who composed the acclaimed soundtrack for “RRR.”
