South Africa’s rising star Dewald Brevis has hit top form at the right time, scoring 53, 75* and 101* in his last three SA20 matches, finishing as the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer behind Quinton de Kock. His recent performances have positioned him as a key contender to bolster South Africa’s batting line-up at the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026.

With less than two weeks remaining before the tournament begins and uncertainties surrounding David Miller’s fitness due to a groin injury, Brevis is emerging as a central figure in South Africa’s plans. The team aims to build around the talented batter, who is renowned for his innovative stroke play, including his signature no-look six, and ability to dominate innings.

Ryan Rickelton, recently added to South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad, highlighted Brevis’s importance: “Our trump card is always going to be Brevis, just with the way he plays the game. He does things that many of us can’t.”

Brevis’s explosive form was evident in the SA20 final, where he scored a century—accounting for nearly two-thirds of Pretoria Capitals’ runs in a losing effort. His other recent knocks include a 75* off 38 balls in a successful chase against Sunrisers Eastern Cape and a vital 53 to rescue his team from 7 for 5 against Joburg Super Kings. His shift from No. 5 to No. 4 in the batting order during the tournament significantly boosted his performance, demonstrating his maturity and readiness for high-pressure situations.

Keshav Maharaj, captain of Pretoria Capitals, noted the positive change: “With the responsibility batting at No. 4, he showed what he’s capable of. He’s got the ability to score a hundred if he faces 50 balls. His recent form shows his growth and maturity.”

South Africa’s coaching staff is expected to deploy Brevis at No. 4 in the upcoming series against the West Indies, with the team’s opening pair of Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram already settled. Brevis, who has featured 12 times in T20Is with a strike rate of 166.48 and a top score of 125*, has demonstrated his capability in this position and is viewed as a vital component of the team’s strategies.

If fit, Miller will slot in after Brevis, with Jason Smith or Tristan Stubbs likely to fill the No. 6 role, adding depth and power to the middle order. Recent form from SA20—such as Markram’s second T20 century and Stubbs’s impactful 63* in the final—has further boosted confidence across the squad.

West Indies white-ball captain Shai Hope, who played alongside Brevis at Pretoria Capitals, praised his talent: “He oozes confidence and feels he can excel in any situation. He’s a proper cricketer—natural talent, professionalism—and one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. I want to see him succeed, though hopefully not too well against us in this series.”

South Africa’s three-match T20 series against the West Indies begins in Paarl on Tuesday, with subsequent games scheduled on Thursday and Saturday. Despite his commitments in the SA20 final, Brevis remains available for all three matches, positioning him as a key player heading into the World Cup.
