Washington: United States President Donald Trump has strongly denied media reports claiming that the country’s top military officer warned him about the risks of attacking Iran, calling the reports “100 percent incorrect” and accusing the media of spreading false information.
Trump responded in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, dismissing claims that General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had cautioned against military action. The president asserted that Caine had not opposed potential strikes and was confident the United States could prevail if a conflict occurred.
Reports Highlighted Risks of Military Action
Earlier reports by major media outlets, including The Washington Post and Axios, suggested that General Caine had warned about the risks of a potential strike, including the possibility of prolonged conflict, American casualties and limited support from regional allies.
The reports also noted concerns about depleted US munitions stockpiles due to ongoing military commitments, which could complicate any major operation against Iran.
Officials familiar with internal discussions said Caine had provided military options and outlined potential consequences, including escalation and operational challenges.
Trump Rejects Claims, Backs Military Leadership
Rejecting the reports, Trump praised General Caine’s leadership and insisted the general was fully prepared to carry out any military decision if ordered. He said the military leadership was focused on winning and emphasised that the final decision on any potential military action rests with him.
Trump also accused the media of deliberately misrepresenting internal discussions, stating that reports suggesting divisions within his administration over Iran policy were inaccurate.
Rising Tensions and Military Preparedness
The developments come amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, with Washington deploying significant military assets to the Middle East and continuing diplomatic efforts alongside military preparations.
Iran has indicated its willingness to pursue negotiations but has also warned of serious consequences if attacked, raising concerns about a wider regional conflict.
The situation remains fluid, with diplomatic talks ongoing and military options under consideration as the US administration evaluates its next steps.
