In a recent announcement on Wednesday, the government revealed a 25 percent rise in cooking gas production, aiming to address the ongoing LPG shortage across the country. Despite this increase, many families are still grappling with severe supply disruptions, especially during the peak wedding season, which has led to widespread logistical challenges.
The escalating tensions between the US, Iran, and Israel have begun to influence domestic supplies, with reports of panic buying and disrupted imports contributing to the crisis. Notably, Nashik has been hit hard, experiencing a critical shortage of commercial gas cylinders. This shortage has begun to affect social events, including weddings, with many families facing difficult decisions.
In Nashik, the Belsare family is currently preparing for their daughter Khushboo’s wedding scheduled for March 14. However, their celebrations are marred by fuel shortages. The venue owner recently informed the family that they cannot provide the necessary gas for catering. They have been given an ultimatum: either secure five commercial cylinders or reduce their menu and guest count.
With just 48 hours remaining before the wedding, the family faces a tough choice—either scale down the celebration or undertake a frantic search across the city for cylinders. Similar challenges are being faced by numerous other families in Nashik as the district’s wedding season reaches its peak.
The Petroleum Ministry’s Joint Secretary (Marketing & Oil Refinery), Sujata Sharma, emphasized that the government is prioritizing domestic LPG needs. She explained that the country previously imported 60 percent of its LPG, mostly via the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has now shut amid its conflict with the US and Israel.
Sharma also dismissed fears of a crisis driven by panic buying, urging consumers to avoid unnecessary rush bookings. To streamline distribution and prevent diversion, the government has introduced measures such as a One-Time Delivery Code system and extended LPG rebooking from 21 to 25 days. A dedicated committee has been formed to oversee the LPG supply situation and develop a diversion plan to ensure equitable distribution.
While efforts are underway to increase production and stabilize supplies, families and businesses continue to face the immediate challenges posed by the ongoing shortages.
