Washington D.C. – A stunning observation by NASA’s Earth Observatory has unveiled a mysterious and ancient formation in the Sahara Desert, dating back to a time when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth.

Strange “Black Mesas” Captivate Scientists

Three flat-topped, circular plateaus, known as “black mesas,” have been spotted in Mauritania, a country in West Africa. The mesas, estimated to be over 250 million years old, are coated in a thin layer of rock varnish, a natural glaze formed by microorganisms over thousands of years.

Formation Still Active

Despite their age, the black mesas are still shaping the desert landscape today, creating massive dunes that stretch for miles and even carving out wind-swept voids visible from space. This rare phenomenon has left scientists in awe, providing a unique glimpse into the Earth’s geological history.

A Natural Wonder

The discovery of the black mesas has sparked widespread interest among geologists and scientists, who are studying the area to learn more about the Earth’s formation and the processes that have shaped our planet over millions of years.
