The monster winter storm that has impacted nearly half of the United States hit the tri-state area for nearly all of Sunday, bringing near-blizzard conditions and and making travel treacherous as it dumped more than 10 inches of snow in the New York City area and more than 18 inches in parts of the Hudson Valley.

  • The NYC area was expecting 8 to 12 inches of snow, and the winter storm that slammed half the U.S. certainly delivered on that, dropping just over 10 inches in Central Park by the end of Sunday
  • Parts of the Hudson Valley saw 18+ inches of snow, the highest totals in the region
  • Freezing rain and sleet limited totals in some areas near the city and south of it into New Jersey, though that’ll turn into ice on the ground, thanks to the extreme cold.
  • Snowfall rates consistently remained around 1-2 inches an hour throughout the day. Travel was nearly impossible at times, with near-blizzard conditions limiting visibility and making roads treacherous.
  • States of emergency were in effect in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut along with nearly two dozen other states across the country. Transit was heavily disrupted.
  • NYC public school buildings will be closed Monday and classes are moving remote.
  • Once the precipitation moves out, dangerous cold remains through at least next week. That means whatever snow falls will stick around.
