Since February 1, 2026, the Sun has entered an unusually active phase, unleashing a sustained series of powerful solar flares that have prompted heightened monitoring by space agencies worldwide, including India’s Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Solar flares are massive explosions on the Sun’s surface caused by the sudden release of tangled magnetic energy. These events send intense bursts of radiation and light into space. While Earth’s atmosphere shields people on the ground from direct harm, strong flares can disrupt GPS services, radio communications, and power grids.

Space weather monitoring organisations, including NASA and its Solar Dynamics Observatory, have recorded the recent activity, identifying it as among the most intense in recent years. According to scientists, the flares observed since February 1 rank within the top 20 most powerful solar outbursts detected since continuous satellite monitoring began in 1996.

Researchers attribute the heightened activity to a particularly active region on the Sun’s surface—areas known to be hotspots for flare generation. Such activity is common near the peak of the Sun’s 11-year solar cycle, which scientists say is currently underway and expected to continue through 2026.

In response, ISRO has issued alerts and placed mission control centres on heightened readiness, closely tracking more than 50 operational satellites. Officials have warned of a “strong possibility” of radio blackouts affecting certain frequency bands and say rapid-response measures are in place to mitigate any disruptions.

International partners, including NASA and other space weather prediction centres, are also closely observing the Sun’s behaviour to assess ongoing risks. While solar flares themselves do not cause direct physical damage on Earth, experts caution that their impact on communication networks and space-based technologies can be significant during periods of intense solar activity.
