Jacob Duffy stole the spotlight with an impressive debut performance for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their latest IPL clash. The New Zealand pacer, making his first appearance in the tournament, delivered a match-winning spell that left spectators and experts alike praising his impact.
Reflecting on his performance, Duffy recalled the challenging moments from his recent past, notably the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad three weeks earlier, where he was taken for 42 runs in three wicketless overs. That night, Abhishek Sharma had been ruthless, swiftly scoring a half-century off just 18 balls and helping India set a mammoth total.
However, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the scene was different. The pitch offered “spongy bounce,” according to RCB captain Rajat Patidar, contrasting the flat tracks of previous matches. In front of a raucous crowd of nearly 30,000, Duffy seized his opportunity.
The breakthrough came early. After Abhishek Sharma lofted a six over cover, Duffy responded by adjusting his length, using the surface’s bounce to nip the ball off the seam. His second over proved pivotal, with Abhishek top-edging a pull and being caught behind. Duffy then struck again in the same over, dismissing Travis Head with a well-directed short ball that Head pulled straight to deep square leg, taking two wickets in that spell.
In his third over, Reddy fell victim to the pitch’s zip, caught at short midwicket after a flat-batted shot. Throughout his spell, Duffy demonstrated clarity and confidence, opting for simplicity and exploiting the conditions to devastating effect.
“I just tried to keep things fairly simple. The plan was to use the new ball, especially since it does a bit here in Bangalore,” Duffy explained. Drawing inspiration from Josh Hazlewood’s successful season at the venue last year, he aimed to replicate that success in his own style.
Duffy’s rapid spell forced the Sunrisers Hyderabad to abandon their original plan of locking Heinrich Klaasen at No. 4, as the Kiwi’s wickets disrupted their batting order. His four-over spell was a testament to seizing the moment when the ball is hardest and the conditions are most favorable.
RCB captain Patidar revealed that bowling Duffy wasn’t a premeditated decision but an instinctive call, based on his impactful start. After completing his spell, Duffy walked off the field to a chorus of cheers from the pavilion, with thousands chanting his name.
“It was awesome,” Duffy said. “I’ve heard great things about Bangalore and RCB, and this was a hell of a way to start. I was lucky to pick up a few wickets early, and the skipper kept giving me the ball. Finishing my spell was a bonus.”
While the night also featured stellar performances from Devdutt Padikkal and Virat Kohli, it was Duffy’s spell that earned him the Player of the Match award. His debut performance promises more exciting days ahead, as he prepares for tougher challenges and batters who will test him in the future.
For now, Duffy’s memorable start in the IPL has set the stage for what could be a promising chapter in his career.
