As Valentine’s Day approaches, a unique dining experience is making waves in New York City. Same Same Wine Bar in Hell’s Kitchen has launched a new concept allowing guests to bring their artificial intelligence chatbots along for dinner, transforming the traditional romantic outing into an AI-assisted social event.
The café has rearranged its space to accommodate devices such as phones or tablets, enabling patrons to engage with their virtual companions while enjoying food and wine. This initiative, organized by EvaAI—a platform offering AI-generated characters for text and video interactions—aims to normalize AI companionship in public settings.
Attendees can select from pre-designed avatars or customize their digital partners, adjusting appearance and personality traits to suit their preferences. During the event’s debut night, participants were seen engrossed in conversations with the virtual faces displayed on their screens, attracting media, tech enthusiasts, and regular users of AI companionship apps.
Among the guests was Richter, a 34-year-old New Yorker who has been engaging with AI companions for years. She shared that these interactions provide emotional flexibility and comfort, allowing her to connect on her own terms without the pressures of traditional dating. However, Richter emphasized the importance of moderation, limiting AI interactions to maintain real-life social connections.
The organizers highlight that their goal isn’t to replace human relationships but to reduce stigma around AI companionship. Julia Momblat, Head of Partnerships at EvaAI, explained that taking AI companions into public spaces aims to normalize and demystify these relationships, making them more accessible and less taboo.
Momblat clarified that EvaAI’s offerings are intended to support individuals who are single or seeking to improve their communication skills, rather than serving as substitutes for real-life connections. The rise in interest among younger demographics exploring AI for companionship reflects a broader societal shift, with online communities dedicated to AI relationships expanding rapidly.
This initiative aligns with recent surveys indicating increased curiosity and acceptance of AI in personal interactions. As conversations about AI’s role in our social lives continue to evolve, events like the one at Same Same Wine Bar are helping to spark broader discussions about how technology is shaping human connection in the modern age.
