While important people from the US and Iran were talking about finding a peaceful solution in Islamabad on Saturday the Strait of Hormuz was very tense. American warships were sailing through the water, which is disputed and this led to a standoff with Iranian forces.
The Wall Street Journal said that two US Navy warships tried to go through this part of the water and Irans navy got very upset. A ship that was not part of the military was nearby. Recorded what was being said on the radio.
Iranian forces said “This is the warning. This is the warning.”
The US ship replied “We are sailing through the water in accordance with law. We do not want to cause any problems. We will follow the rules of our governments cease-fire.”
The US warships were able to sail through the strait without any problems, which’s the first time this has happened in nearly six weeks. Iran had basically closed off the waterway since the war started.
Tehran said that any ship that wants to sail through the Strait of Hormuz has to talk to them.. The US did not do this before they sent their warships.
For weeks Iran has been using missiles and drones to stop ships from sailing through the Strait of Hormuz. This is an important route because about 20 per cent of the worlds crude oil passes through it. The US warships sailed through the strait after Trump said that the US was going to “clear out” the strait.
After what happened US Central Command said that the warships did what they were supposed to do and then left. They said that this was a sign that the US does not think Iran should be, in control of the strait and that they are trying to open it up for trade. They are even using drones to remove mines.
Iranian media said that their forces worked with the people who were talking in Islamabad and that the US ships turned around after they were confronted.
