So far, IPL 2026 has been marked by flat pitches, huge sixes, and constant run scoring. On Tuesday, Gujarat Titans (GT) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will play in Qualifier 1 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium. The bowlers could decide the winner.
The short lines at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala make it hard for bowlers to hit the ball. In the last few days, Jos Buttler of the Gujarat Titans and Tim David of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru were destroying the ball box by hitting huge sixes into the stands and even out of the stadium. This gave us a sneak peek at what might happen in Qualifier 1.
A lot of people think it will be another high-scoring game. Five times this year, teams scored more than 200 runs in the three games played here. The only one that didn’t make it finished at 199/8. Averaging almost 25 sixes per game, 74 sixes have been hit in those three games.
A lot of runs will be scored, which will make the hitters very happy.
It will also be another round in the fight between Virat Kohli, known as the “King,” and Shubman Gill, known as the “Prince,” who many people see as the next great batsman in Indian cricket. During their hour-long net meetings, the two looked at ease. After Sai Sudharsan, Gill is in second place in the Orange Cap race with 616 runs scored in 13 games. Kohli, on the other hand, has recovered from a slump in the middle of the tournament with a powerful hundred and now has 557 runs for the season.
But even with all the talk about the batsmen’s power, it could be the bowlers who decide which way the game goes.
Vijay Dahiya, assistant coach at GT, thinks the game is closely matched because both teams have good bowling attacks.
“Putting runs on the board is always important in cricket.” But in the end, you need a strong bowling unit, which is what you have. Follow through is also very important. When you look at both teams, the bowling units have been very consistent. The bowlers believe in themselves, and the leader and management also trust them, so you don’t see many changes on either team. “I believe that pays off,” Dahiya told the press.
With 24 wickets in 14 games, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kagiso Rabada are tied for the most wickets between the two teams, with Kumar being the more experienced Indian player having a better economy rate. Siraj, who has 17 wickets, is not far behind. It might become a tie if Josh Hazlewood (12), Jason Holder (13), Prasidh Krishna (14) and Rasikh Salam Dar (14) are also in the running. The fight is even more interesting when spin bowlers Rashid Khan (19) and Krunal Pandya (11) are added.
Dahiya agreed that negotiating Bhuvneshwar Kumar during the powerplay would be very important, but he also told RCB that GT had just as much firepower with Siraj and Rabada on their team.
“The challenger, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, is the same, and I think the same is true for our opposition as well.” When it comes to the power play, our numbers are some of the best in the league. So if things go well, it’s good for both teams, Dahiya said.
RCB captain Rajat Patidar agreed and said that Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s part could be very important when he faces Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill, who have scored the most runs this season. “Our strength is bowling,” Patidar said. It will be very important how we bowl during the powerplay. We will try to get wickets early, which is what we have done all tournament. It can make a difference to do the same thing over and over again. “Bhuvi has done that, and we hope to keep doing it,” Patidar said.
This season has been all about hitting and big scores, so Qualifier 1 may come down to which bowling attack can keep their cool for a few important overs. The team whose bowlers blink last could easily make it straight to the IPL final on a pitch that is made for big hits.
