In response to the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the idea of birthright citizenship, US President Donald Trump declared that it was “too bad” for the country. On social media on Tuesday, he stated that he is prepared to introduce legislation and “easily” make it up in Congress.

Trump stated that Congress should begin working “today” to abolish the “expensive and unfair” birthright citizenship in a post on X.The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold birthright citizenship is extremely detrimental to our nation, but we can easily make up for it in Congress by passing legislation that has been decided upon during this process with the president’s backing. There is no need for a lengthy and cumbersome Constitutional Amendment! Congress should begin working today to abolish birthright citizenship, which is costly and unjust to our nation. The court overturned Trump’s executive order on Tuesday that attempted to deny citizenship to children born in the United States to parents who are either temporarily or illegally in the country. “They will have my Complete and Total Support!” Trump added.

On the last day of its session, the court decided 6-3 to uphold almost everyone born in the United States’ right to citizenship. Lower courts have earlier stopped the action. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion for the Supreme Court, which concurred.According to Roberts, “children born in the United States to parents who are either temporarily or illegally present are ‘subject to the jurisdiction’ of the United States and are citizens at birth under the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.”The right to enjoy rights and to freely engage in our democratic community was the essence of citizenship both then and now. This commitment was extended to “every free-born person in this land” by the Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment. Today, we fulfill that commitment,” he wrote.

It is evident from the Supreme Court’s decision on Tuesday that a constitutional amendment would be required. Roberts, who authored the court’s opinion, cited the Constitution’s Fourteenth Amendment to support his conclusion that, with very few exceptions, every person born in the nation is a citizen.

In a statement, the Justice Department declared that it is “committed to tackling illegal birth tourism schemes by working diligently with US Attorneys across the country to uphold the law.”The government stated in a post on X that actors who try to take advantage of legal gaps to grant their children automatic citizenship are a threat to national security and will face consequences.

On the first day of his administration’s more extensive immigration crackdown, Trump signed the birthright citizenship order. Additionally, it was the first of Trump’s immigration-related initiatives to go to the Supreme Court for a final decision.
