Goa Nightclub Fire Claims 25 Lives; Authorities Suspend Officials Over Permit Allowance
In a tragic incident in Goa, a fire at the nightclub Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora village has resulted in the deaths of 25 individuals, including four tourists and 14 staff members. The blaze erupted around midnight on Sunday at the popular party venue located approximately 25 kilometers from Panaji, the state capital.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the scene early morning that the nightclub’s general manager has been arrested. An arrest warrant has also been issued against the club’s owner, and a magisterial inquiry has been initiated to investigate the circumstances leading to the fire.
In a significant development, three senior officials of the Goa government have been suspended for their alleged role in permitting the nightclub to commence operations in 2023. The suspended officials include Siddhi Tushar Harlankar, then Director of Panchayat; Dr. Shamila Monteiro, then Member Secretary of the Goa State Pollution Control Board; and Raghuvir Bagkar, then Secretary of Village Panchayat Arpora-Nagoa.
The officials are accused of granting the necessary permissions that allowed Birch by Romeo Lane to operate, raising questions about regulatory oversight prior to the tragic incident. The fire has sent shockwaves through the community and highlighted concerns regarding safety standards and oversight at entertainment venues in the region.
