Mysore, Karnataka: Long queues and early-morning rushes have become the new norm outside Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) showrooms, as demand for authentic Mysore silk sarees surges amid shortages. Women are reportedly lining up as early as 4 am to purchase these coveted handwoven fabrics, which are priced between Rs 23,000 and Rs 2.5 lakh.

The scarcity has led to strict purchase rules, including a limit of one saree per customer and a token system to manage crowds. These measures highlight both the desirability and exclusivity of Mysore silk, a traditional craft with a GI (Geographical Indication) tag that guarantees authenticity and quality.

Demand Outpaces Supply

The renewed interest in Mysore silk was brought to prominence on social media, especially after a post by defence analyst Rakesh Krishnan Simha on X (formerly Twitter), which showcased the long queues and limited stock. KSIC, the sole producer of authentic Mysore silk sarees, maintains exclusive rights to manufacture these garments, ensuring their premium status but also constraining large-scale production.

Industry insiders cite a shortage of trained weavers as a primary factor. Artisans undergo extensive training—up to six or seven months—to achieve proficiency, making rapid expansion difficult. Seasonal demand during festivals and weddings, including Varalakshmi Puja, Gowri Ganesha, and Deepavali, further strains supply, with stocks often selling out quickly after arrival.

Mixed Reactions Online

The online community has responded to the spectacle of long queues with a mix of admiration and defense. Some users compared the demand to other luxury pursuits, saying, “People queue for PlayStation, iPhones, and at cult restaurants—why is it surprising if they queue for a silk saree?”

Others emphasized the importance of maintaining quality and authenticity through limited production. “It’s better they stay exclusive to preserve tradition,” one comment read, while another highlighted KSIC’s non-commercial approach, describing it as a safeguard against counterfeit silk—a persistent issue in the private market.

A Heritage Luxury

As the demand continues to surpass supply, Mysore silk sarees are increasingly regarded not just as traditional attire but as luxury heritage products. Their exclusivity and craftsmanship only enhance their appeal, solidifying their status as a symbol of Karnataka’s rich textile legacy.
