In a developing weather emergency, millions across the United States are preparing for a severe ice storm that could cause widespread damage and outages. From New Mexico to the Carolinas, residents are bracing for conditions that may topple trees, damage power lines, and lead to prolonged power outages, with some areas experiencing snow so heavy that travel could become nearly impossible.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), approximately 160 million Americans—almost half the country’s population—are under various watches and warnings issued Thursday afternoon. The storm system, expected to begin affecting the U.S. on Friday and persist through the weekend, is forecasted to bring a mix of heavy snow, freezing rain, sleet, and potentially dangerous ice.

Meteorologists warn that an atmospheric river could intensify the storm, pulling moisture from the Gulf Coast across Texas, Georgia, and the Carolinas, before advancing northeastward. In major cities along the East Coast, including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston, forecasters predict significant snowfall that could hinder travel and disrupt daily routines.

“Snow amounts could reach a foot or more in the I-95 corridor from D.C. to Boston,” officials said, emphasizing the increasing confidence in a major impact event.

Washington, D.C., officials issued a stern warning: “The combination of heavy snow, ice, and prolonged cold temperatures presents a significant risk to life and property across the entire region,” the NWS warned.

Preparing for Impact: The Numbers Behind the Storm

Jackson, Mississippi: The city has zero snowplows, relying instead on skid steers and small excavators to clear roads. James Caldwell, deputy director of public works, said they also have three salt-and-sand trucks ready to treat roads before the freezing weather hits.

Ice Threat: Forecasters warn that just half an inch of ice can cause catastrophic damage. Several states, including Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Tennessee, are expecting at least this much, which could lead to widespread power outages and dangerous travel conditions.

Nashville, Tennessee: The city’s fleet includes one snowplow named Dolly Plowton, after country legend Dolly Parton, and another called Snowlene, inspired by the song “Jolene.” The city operates three major snowplows and additional brine trucks to combat ice.

Travel Disruptions: Four major airports—Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta, Memphis, and Charlotte—are preparing for delays and cancellations due to winter weather, with more East Coast airports likely to be affected as the storm moves east.

Road Treatment: Chicago has 12 beet juice trucks that help prevent refreezing by lowering the water’s freezing point, while Memphis operates 15 snow and ice removal trucks, along with six brine spreaders. Overall, Tennessee’s Department of Transportation manages over 1,400 salt and brine trucks across the state.

Widespread Alerts and Precautions

By late Wednesday, winter storm watches covered parts of at least 19 states, including Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and others, impacting an estimated 55 million people. The storm’s reach extends from the southern plains up the East Coast, with forecasted temperatures at the freezing point of 32°F (0°C) or below, increasing the risk of ice formation.

Parts of Minnesota and North Dakota are expected to face wind chills of minus 50°F (-45.6°C), a stark reminder of the extreme cold that accompanies the storm. Nils Anderson, owner of Duluth Gear Exchange, advised preparedness: “When it feels like negative 34, you need to cover skin and be ready.”

Resources and Response Efforts

Nashville has expanded snow routes by adding 600 miles last year to reach more neighborhoods. Texas has over 1,000 pieces of winter weather equipment, including snowplows and brine tanks, with the state coordinating with contractors for additional support. Arkansas maintains 121 salt storage facilities and operates hundreds of salt spreaders and snowplows, with 78,000 cubic yards of salt on hand.
