In a significant setback for Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reportedly abandoned its long-discussed proposal to operate Islamabad International Airport. The deal, which was in discussion since August last year, appears to have fallen through after UAE officials failed to identify a local partner to whom airport operations could be outsourced, according to sources cited by Pakistan’s Express Tribune.

The decision comes shortly after UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed’s brief visit to New Delhi earlier this month—a trip that garnered significant attention and is believed to have indirectly influenced the UAE’s stance on Pakistan.

Widening Gulf Rift and Shifting Alliances

The timing of the UAE’s withdrawal coincides with evolving tensions between the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Once close Gulf allies, the two nations are now engaged in a rare public dispute over support for rival factions in Yemen. Meanwhile, Pakistan has signed a defense agreement with Saudi Arabia and is actively pursuing the formation of what has been termed an “Islamic NATO” alongside Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Amid these shifting geopolitical alliances, the UAE has pivoted towards India, finalizing new defense agreements and deepening bilateral cooperation. Conversely, Saudi Arabia appears to be strengthening its ties with Pakistan, illustrating a realignment within regional power dynamics.

Deteriorating Pakistan-UAE Relations

Historically, the UAE was one of Pakistan’s largest trading partners and a major source of remittances. The two countries enjoyed close cooperation across sectors including defense and energy. However, over time, this relationship has cooled due to safety concerns, licensing disputes, and Pakistan’s aging infrastructure.

The UAE’s proven track record in managing airports in challenging environments, such as Afghanistan, further underscores the significance of its decision to withdraw from the Islamabad airport project—marking a substantial loss of confidence.

Growing UAE-India Ties

Meanwhile, relations between the UAE and India continue to strengthen. Following Sheikh Mohamed’s visit to New Delhi, the UAE announced the release of hundreds of Indian prisoners—a move widely viewed as a gesture of goodwill. During the visit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally welcomed Sheikh Mohamed at the airport, and the leaders reviewed a broad spectrum of bilateral cooperation.

The UAE’s shift towards India signals a notable realignment in regional diplomacy, with implications that could reshape alliances and influence the geopolitical landscape in South Asia and the Gulf region.
