Airports across Asia are on high alert following the recent confirmation of two Nipah virus cases in West Bengal, India, raising fears of a potential outbreak in the region. The Indian health authorities confirmed the cases since December but emphasized that prompt containment measures have been implemented.

The Nipah virus, a highly contagious and deadly pathogen, has prompted heightened vigilance among neighboring countries. Thailand, Nepal, Vietnam, and others have intensified screening procedures at airports, including temperature checks and health declarations for travelers arriving from India.

What is Nipah Virus and Why Is It Dangerous?

Nipah virus is primarily transmitted from animals such as fruit bats and pigs to humans through direct contact or exposure to secretions. The virus can incubate in the human body for 4 to 14 days. Initial symptoms include high fever, nausea, vomiting, and respiratory issues, which can escalate to pneumonia. In severe cases, it causes brain swelling, leading to neurological symptoms like drowsiness and seizures.

The virus is highly contagious among humans and carries a fatality rate ranging from 40% to 75%, making it significantly deadlier than COVID-19. Currently, there is no approved vaccine for Nipah virus.

Historical Outbreaks and Spread

First identified in 1998 among pig farmers in Malaysia, Nipah virus has caused outbreaks nearly every year across Asia, including India, Bangladesh, Singapore, and the Philippines. It was named after a village in Malaysia where it was first discovered. In India, the virus was first detected in West Bengal in 2001, with the most recent cases emerging in Kerala in 2018 and again in 2023.

The virus has also been linked to the harvesting of raw date sap in Bangladesh, where fruit bats often roost in date palms.

Current Situation and Response

The latest outbreak marks the first cases detected in West Bengal since 2007. Indian health officials have conducted extensive surveillance, testing nearly 200 contacts, and confirmed no further spread so far. The government has stated that all necessary public health measures are in place and continues to monitor the situation closely.

Internationally, neighboring countries have ramped up screening measures. Myanmar has advised against non-essential travel to West Bengal, while China has strengthened disease prevention efforts along its borders.

The World Health Organization considers Nipah virus a high epidemic risk due to its high fatality rate and lack of a vaccine. Authorities worldwide remain vigilant to prevent further cases and potential outbreaks.
