In a growing trend, Western nations are increasingly pursuing stronger relationships with China, citing concerns over U.S. unpredictability on the global stage. Notably, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made his first official visit to China in eight years, engaging in high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

During his visit, Starmer met with Xi and other Chinese officials, signing multiple cooperation agreements aimed at boosting economic ties. The UK leader emphasized the importance of engaging with China, stating, “China is the second biggest economy in the world. Along with Hong Kong, it’s our third-biggest trading partner. And through this visit, we’ve opened up lots of opportunities for jobs and wealth creation.” He also criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s stance, suggesting it is unwise for the UK to “stick its head in the sand” regarding China.

In response to Trump’s comments, Beijing’s foreign ministry declared that China is eager to strengthen cooperation with all countries in a spirit of mutual benefit and win-win results.

Meanwhile, President Trump has voiced strong opposition to Western countries doing business with China. While attending the premiere of a documentary about First Lady Melania Trump, reporters asked for his reaction to Britain’s engagement with China. Trump responded, “Well, it’s very dangerous for them to do that,” highlighting concerns over the UK’s recent moves.

Trump’s warnings extend beyond the UK. After Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited China earlier this month to promote trade and tourism agreements, Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on imports from Canada. He also stated, “It’s even more dangerous, I think, for Canada to get into business with China. Canada is not doing well. They’re doing very poorly, and you can’t look at China as the answer.”

Starmer’s Asian trip continues with a brief stop in Japan on Saturday, where he plans to meet with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
