Bangalore: Indian IT giant Infosys has announced a strategic partnership with US-based artificial intelligence firm Anthropic to develop and deploy enterprise AI agents across major industries. The collaboration aims to bolster Infosys’s AI offerings amid growing concerns that automation could threaten traditional service models in the sector.

The announcement comes shortly after a sharp decline in Indian tech stocks, triggered by investor fears of AI-driven disruption. Reuters reports that the market sell-off was partly fueled by the recent launch of a new AI tool by Anthropic, which is backed by Amazon and Alphabet. Notably, Anthropic’s revenue in India has doubled over the past four months.

Under the partnership, Infosys and Anthropic will jointly build AI agents, initially focusing on the telecommunications sector before expanding into financial services, manufacturing, and software development. Anthropic has been rapidly expanding its presence in enterprise AI, recently launching Claude Cowork, an AI assistant designed to assist white-collar professionals with computer-based tasks. The startup already collaborates with Indian firms, including Air India.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei emphasized the importance of domain expertise, stating, “There’s a big gap between an AI model that works in a demo and one that works in a regulated industry. To close that gap, you need domain knowledge,” as reported by Reuters.

The partnership appeared to stabilize investor sentiment; Infosys shares surged nearly 5%, snapping a four-day decline, before closing 1.9% higher. The stock was among the top gainers on the Nifty 50 index, which ended the session marginally up.

This positive market response follows a tough period for Indian IT stocks, which last week experienced their worst performance in over ten months, losing a combined $44.46 billion in market value in February alone.

In the December quarter, Infosys reported that AI-related services contributed approximately 5.5% to its total revenue, with rival Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) indicating AI made up about 5.8%. Chief Executive Salil Parekh highlighted the rapid growth of AI services, noting that Infosys is engaged in 4,600 AI projects and has developed over 500 AI agents.

Industry analysts, like Centrum Broking’s Piyush Pandey, suggest Infosys is well-positioned to capitalize on increasing demand for enterprise AI. Pandey pointed out that Infosys has greater exposure to discretionary spending, whereas TCS’s focus on public sector clients may delay AI adoption due to longer budgeting cycles.

The partnership reflects a broader transformation within India’s $250 billion IT services industry, as global clients increasingly experiment with generative AI and automation. Firms like Infosys are now prioritizing the integration of AI into their core offerings to avoid being overtaken by rapid technological change.

Moving forward, the success of Infosys’s efforts will hinge on its ability to convert pilot projects into large-scale deployments within highly regulated industries. The next phase of growth will depend heavily on building trust with enterprise clients, demonstrating that AI agents can operate reliably within complex compliance and operational frameworks.
