The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) announced a major technological upgrade set to go live on April 11, which will reduce its system response time to nanoseconds. This transformation aims to enable the exchange to process nearly 100 million trades per second, marking a significant milestone in India’s financial infrastructure.

In a recent event organized by the Association of NSE Members of India (ANMI), NSE Managing Director and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan revealed that the exchange’s current response time of approximately 100 microseconds will be slashed by nearly 1,000 times. This will drastically enhance trading speeds, supporting the growing volumes across various segments.

“From now on, NSE will deliver response times in nanoseconds. The speed increase is manifold—almost 1,000 times faster than what you experience today,” Chauhan stated, emphasizing that the move positions NSE as a “real-time finance” platform.

This ultra-low latency upgrade is expected to bolster NSE’s ability to manage surging trading activity, especially benefiting high-frequency and institutional traders by minimizing execution delays. However, Chauhan also sounded a note of caution regarding cybersecurity risks, which are poised to escalate with increased transaction speeds and volumes.

“All this scale is unprecedented, and cybersecurity must be prioritized. If we fail to secure our systems, all progress can come to a halt,” Chauhan warned, urging vendors to ensure robust cybersecurity measures.

To support the heightened demand, NSE is expanding its colocation infrastructure, currently operating over 2,000 racks, with plans to scale up to approximately 4,500 racks. Colocation services enable trading members to locate their servers within the exchange’s data centers, drastically reducing latency and enabling faster market data access and order execution—crucial for high-frequency traders.

Chauhan also highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence to help vendors develop more efficient, cost-effective solutions.

Beyond technological enhancements, NSE is diversifying its asset offerings. The exchange is set to introduce electricity futures and gold futures, with contracts for difference (CFDs) under development. Notably, NSE is preparing to launch 10-gram gold futures, which recently received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

This strategic push aims to position NSE at the forefront of digital trading innovation while expanding its product suite to meet evolving investor demands.
