Suryakumar Yadav Confident of India’s Comeback in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup After Defeat to South Africa

Ahmedabad: India captain Suryakumar Yadav expressed confidence that his team will bounce back strongly in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup despite suffering a heavy defeat to South Africa in their Super Eight clash.

India’s 76-run loss to South Africa ended their 12-match winning streak in the tournament and has made their path to the knockout stages more challenging. The defending champions, who lifted the title in Barbados in 2024, will now likely need victories against Zimbabwe and the West Indies to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Captain Urges Team to Keep Things Simple

Despite the setback, Suryakumar emphasized that the team does not need major changes to regain momentum.

“Hopefully bat well, bowl well and field well. That’s it. We’ll try and keep it simple and play the same brand of cricket. Nothing changes, and I think we’ll come back strong,” he said.

India will next face Zimbabwe in Chennai on Thursday, with qualification scenarios still in their control depending on upcoming results.

Powerplay Collapse a Major Concern

India’s chase of 187 was derailed by early wickets, including that of top-ranked T20I batter Abhishek Sharma, who was dismissed for just 14 runs. India lost three wickets during the Powerplay, making the chase difficult.

Reflecting on the loss, Suryakumar said early wickets played a decisive role.

“When chasing 180-185, you can’t win the game in the Powerplay, but you can lose it. We lost too many wickets early and couldn’t build partnerships,” he said.

David Miller Shines in South Africa’s Victory

South Africa’s win was powered by David Miller, who scored a match-winning 63 off 35 balls and was named Player of the Match. His performance helped South Africa make a strong start to the Super Eight stage.

Miller said the victory showed that India remain beatable and expressed confidence in his team’s chances.

“We are a mature team, and everyone believes in doing their job and delivering under pressure,” he said.

Road Ahead for India

Despite the defeat, India remain in contention for a semi-final spot. With crucial matches ahead, the team will aim to recover quickly and defend their title, as Suryakumar and his squad look to return to winning form in the tournament.
