India Abstains from United Nations General Assembly Vote on Ukraine Ceasefire Resolution Against Russia

India abstained from voting on a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for an immediate, complete, and unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, as the global body marked the fourth anniversary of the conflict.

The resolution, titled “Support for Lasting Peace in Ukraine,” was introduced by Kyiv and adopted with 107 votes in favour, 12 against, and 51 abstentions in the 193-member assembly. India was among the countries that chose to abstain, alongside several others including Bangladesh, Brazil, China, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.

Resolution Calls for Immediate Ceasefire

The resolution urges an immediate halt to hostilities and emphasises efforts toward achieving a lasting peace while reaffirming Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The vote coincided with four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a conflict that continues to impact global security and stability.

India’s abstention reflects its consistent diplomatic position of encouraging dialogue and peaceful resolution without directly aligning with either side in UN voting on the conflict.

Volodymyr Zelensky Welcomes Global Support

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed appreciation to the countries that supported the resolution, calling it an important step toward peace. In a message posted on X, Zelensky thanked the 107 nations that backed Ukraine’s call for a ceasefire and the return of Ukrainian citizens.

“These are the right and necessary steps. And we will keep working actively to achieve peace, together with our partners,” he said.

Antonio Guterres Calls War a Threat to Global Peace

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the conflict as a violation of international law and warned of its continued impact on global peace and security. He stressed the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire as a first step toward a just and lasting resolution.

Guterres noted that civilians continue to suffer the most, with rising casualties highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis. He reiterated that any peace agreement must respect Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

India Maintains Neutral Diplomatic Stance

India’s decision to abstain aligns with its broader diplomatic approach of maintaining neutrality while advocating dialogue and peaceful negotiations. New Delhi has consistently called for an end to hostilities through diplomacy and has avoided taking sides in UN resolutions related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The resolution’s adoption reflects continued global divisions over the war, even as international pressure grows for a ceasefire and negotiated settlement.
