The upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup could mark a historic milestone, with all three Asian cricket giants—India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka—potentially exiting in the semifinals for the first time in 51 years of men’s global white-ball tournaments.
Since the inception of the World Cup in 1975, cricket has hosted 23 men’s tournaments across the ODI and T20I formats. Traditionally, Asian teams—particularly India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka—have been dominant, reaching the knockout stages consistently and securing eight titles among them.
India leads with three titles—two in ODIs and one in T20Is—and has appeared in the semifinals 13 times across formats. Pakistan and Sri Lanka are equally formidable, with each reaching the last four 13 times; Pakistan has six semifinal appearances in ODIs and seven in T20Is, while Sri Lanka has seven in ODIs and six in T20Is.
This dominance has made Asian representation in the knockout stages almost routine. Notably, in the tournament’s first edition in 1975, none of these three Asian teams made it to the semifinals. Since then, at least one of India, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka has consistently featured in the last four stages of most editions.
However, with the Super 8 stage nearing its conclusion, all three Asian powerhouses are now on the brink of elimination. India, currently third in Group 1, suffered their worst T20 World Cup defeat against South Africa. Meanwhile, West Indies’ commanding 107-run victory over Zimbabwe complicates India’s qualification prospects.
India’s path forward depends on winning their remaining matches against Zimbabwe and the West Indies and hoping South Africa beats West Indies to keep their semifinal hopes alive.
In Group 2, England has already secured qualification after consecutive wins over Sri Lanka and Pakistan. New Zealand, buoyed by a strong group-stage performance and a rain-affected tie with Pakistan, is also poised to advance. If New Zealand defeats Sri Lanka on Wednesday, both Sri Lanka and Pakistan will be eliminated before the final Super 8 fixture.
Should that happen, it would mark a historic first in men’s World Cup history—no India, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka in the semifinals—an occurrence only previously seen in the 2006 Champions Trophy, where none of these three teams progressed beyond the group stage.
The fate of the groups will become clearer with Thursday’s Super 8 matches in Colombo, while the qualification scenarios for Group 2 could be settled as early as Wednesday.
