Jamaat Chief Criticises Bangladesh President, Fuels Debate Over Yunus-Led Interim Administration

DHAKA, Feb 26, 2026: The chief of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has publicly criticised Mohammed Shahabuddin, intensifying political tensions and sparking fresh debate over the role of the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In a Facebook post, Jamaat chief and Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman questioned why the President had allegedly withheld crucial details regarding the events of August 5, 2024 — the day Hasina left the country amid widespread unrest.

On that day, Hasina’s Awami League government was removed from power following deadly nationwide protests. Subsequently, an interim administration assumed control, triggering significant political shifts in the country.

The criticism from Rahman comes days after Shahabuddin, in an interview with Bangla daily Kaler Kontho, sharply criticised the Yunus-led administration. The President reportedly described several of its actions as unconstitutional and raised concerns over its governance.

Shahabuddin also alleged that the interim government placed him under virtual house arrest, made attempts to remove him from the presidency, and prevented him from travelling abroad for medical treatment.

The exchange of accusations has further deepened political divisions in Bangladesh, with observers pointing to growing tensions between key political stakeholders amid ongoing debates about constitutional authority and governance in the post-Hasina period.
