PM Modi Flags NCERT Textbook Controversy, Dharmendra Pradhan Promises Action After Supreme Court Ban

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has raised concerns over a controversial reference to judicial corruption in a Class VIII NCERT social science textbook, prompting Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to apologise and assure strict action against those responsible.

The issue emerged after the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) included references to corruption, case pendency, and shortage of judges in a chapter discussing challenges facing the judiciary. Sources said Modi questioned the inclusion during a recent Union Cabinet meeting, reportedly asking, “What are we teaching Class VIII children about judicial corruption?”

Supreme Court Imposes Ban, NCERT Recalls Copies

The controversy escalated after the Supreme Court strongly criticised the textbook content, describing it as potentially defamatory to the judiciary. The court imposed a blanket ban on the book and directed authorities to seize all physical and digital copies.

In response, NCERT removed the e-version of the textbook from its website and halted distribution. Officials said 32 physical copies had already been sold but were being tracked and recalled through NCERT depots.

Education Minister Issues Apology, Orders Inquiry

Pradhan issued an unconditional apology, expressing respect for the judiciary and stating there was no intention to undermine its integrity. He confirmed that an inquiry would be conducted to identify those responsible for drafting and approving the controversial content.

He also assured that the government would fully comply with the Supreme Court’s directives and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Textbook Chapter to Be Revised

NCERT said the chapter, titled “Role of the Judiciary in Our Society,” would be rewritten in consultation with relevant authorities. The revised version is expected to be introduced in the 2026–27 academic session.

Officials added that stricter review and approval mechanisms are being considered to ensure accuracy and sensitivity in future educational materials.

The controversy has sparked a wider debate on educational content oversight, judicial respect, and the process of textbook review in India’s academic system.
