Israel Launches Preemptive Strike on Iran; Explosions Reported in Tehran, Sirens Sound in Tel Aviv

Tehran/Tel Aviv, Feb. 28: Israel launched a “preemptive strike” on Iran on Saturday, triggering explosions in central Tehran and prompting air raid sirens across Tel Aviv, according to official statements and media reports.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz declared a nationwide state of emergency following the strike. In an official statement, the defence ministry said Israel had taken proactive action against Iran and ordered immediate emergency measures across the country.

An explosion was reported near the offices of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in Tehran. It remains unclear whether the 86-year-old leader was present at the time. Khamenei has not appeared publicly in recent days amid escalating regional tensions.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud blast, with thick smoke seen rising over parts of central Tehran. Iranian state television confirmed the explosion but did not release additional details about casualties or damage.

Sirens Across Israel, Iran Closes Airspace

Following the strike, warning sirens sounded across Israel, and citizens received emergency alerts cautioning them about a possible missile attack. The Israeli military described the alerts as precautionary measures to prepare civilians for potential retaliation.

Iran responded by shutting down its airspace and issuing warnings to pilots, as explosions continued to be reported in the capital.

According to the Associated Press, the United States is participating in the Israeli military operation, citing unnamed sources. The US had earlier deployed additional fighter jets and warships to the region amid rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme.

Meanwhile, the US State Department authorised the departure of non-emergency personnel and their families from Israel due to unspecified security risks, according to CBS News.

The advisory followed continued diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran, including a third round of nuclear talks held in Geneva earlier this week.

Trump Warns of Possible Military Action

US President Donald Trump had earlier warned Iran of potential military consequences if it failed to curb its nuclear ambitions. Speaking at an event in Texas, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of negotiations and emphasised the need for a meaningful agreement.

He stated that while military force remains an option, he would prefer a peaceful resolution but described Iran as a “very dangerous” and difficult negotiating partner.

The situation remains highly volatile, with global leaders closely monitoring developments amid fears of a wider regional conflict.
