Skywatchers around the world, including in India, were treated to a spectacular celestial display as a total lunar eclipse—commonly known as the Blood Moon—transformed the full Moon into a glowing red orb. NASA captured this breathtaking event in a stunning timelapse video, shot from its key manufacturing site for the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.

The footage, released by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, was recorded over the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana, highlighting the agency’s strong connection to lunar exploration. The lunar eclipse unfolded over nearly six hours, with totality lasting approximately 58 minutes.

The celestial spectacle began at 2:14 PM IST when the Moon entered the penumbral shadow. It moved into the partial eclipse phase at 3:20 PM, before reaching full totality at 4:34 PM, when it appeared at its deepest red hue. The eclipse peaked at 5:03 PM and concluded at 5:32 PM. The event was best visible in parts of western North America, the Pacific, eastern Asia, and Australia, but was not observable from Europe or Africa.

This eclipse marks the last total lunar eclipse visible from the Americas until June 2029, making it a rare opportunity for astronomers and space enthusiasts. During the event, the Moon situated in the constellation Leo appeared dramatically dimmed, allowing stargazers to observe fainter stars nearby using binoculars or telescopes.

What Causes the Blood Moon?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through Earth’s umbra—the darkest part of its shadow. During this alignment, no direct sunlight reaches the lunar surface. Instead, Earth’s atmosphere scatters shorter blue wavelengths, while longer red wavelengths filter through, bathing the Moon in a reddish hue, hence the nickname “Blood Moon.” Variations in atmospheric conditions, such as dust or pollution, can intensify the red coloration.

Significance of the Location

NASA’s choice to capture the eclipse over the Michoud Assembly Facility adds symbolic significance. This site, managed by the Marshall Space Flight Center, is where key components of NASA’s Artemis Program, including SLS boosters, are assembled for upcoming Moon missions. The eclipse’s occurrence over this lunar launch hub underscores humanity’s enduring pursuit of lunar exploration, with Artemis II scheduled for later in 2026.

As 2026 unfolds as a remarkable year for astronomy and space exploration, the Blood Moon serves as a reminder of the universe’s wonders—bridging age-old awe with cutting-edge science and inspiring public engagement with the cosmos.
