NASA has unveiled new tools allowing the public to track the Artemis II mission—a historic crewed lunar flyby—live in real time. Through an innovative online platform, space enthusiasts and the general public can now see the precise locations of the Orion spacecraft and crew relative to Earth and the Moon, providing unprecedented access to this landmark mission.

The Artemis II mission marks NASA’s first crewed lunar expedition since the Apollo era. Scheduled to last approximately 10 days, it will send four astronauts on a journey around the Moon, serving as a critical test for the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, Orion spacecraft, and the Exploration Ground Systems that support crewed lunar missions.

In an official NASA blog post, officials introduced the Artemis Real-time Orbit Website (AROW). This public-facing portal enables anyone with internet access to track Orion’s position during the mission, utilizing data collected by sensors aboard the spacecraft. The data is transmitted to NASA’s Mission Control Center at Johnson Space Center in Houston, offering continuous updates starting about one minute after liftoff and continuing through Orion’s atmospheric reentry at the end of the mission.

Using AROW, users can visualize Orion’s trajectory, monitor key mission milestones, and access information about lunar landing sites, including historical data from the Apollo program. The platform provides a dynamic view of the spacecraft’s distance from Earth and the Moon, enhancing public engagement and transparency.

Complementing the website, NASA has launched a mobile app that offers similar real-time tracking features, with an added augmented reality (AR) tracker. This innovative feature allows users to see Orion’s position in a more immersive way, superimposing its location over their real-world environment through their smartphone camera.

How to Follow the Artemis II Mission

  1. Visit NASA’s official Artemis II website for live updates, telemetry data, and mission details.
  2. Access the Artemis II Mission Dashboard for real-time tracking of Orion’s position and key milestones.
  3. Watch live mission coverage through NASA’s official channels, including their website and social media platforms.

NASA encourages the public to engage with the mission through these digital tools, fostering a greater understanding of lunar exploration and inspiring future generations of space explorers. As Artemis II prepares to make history, these resources ensure that everyone can witness the journey in real time, making space exploration more accessible than ever before.
